The first thing I want to emphasis should you decide to read my posts regularly and embark on your own journey of detoxing your beauty products, your household products and your body, is don’t be overwhelmed.
About this time last year we realised we needed to seriously look at the food we were eating for the sake of my daughters health. You can read more of our story here, but in brief, she had a Nutrigenomic test to look at what genetic factors might be causing her tummy problems and behavioural issues. When the test results arrived and we had a chat with our health practitioner her comment which really hit home was “your daughter is sensitive to modern day life”. In short, her body wasn’t coping with life in a big city .
What does that mean you might ask?
Our practitioner was referring to the pollution we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the chemicals we put on our skin and breathe in from products we use in our home, along with the stress our bodies deal with in our busy lives.
She wasn’t really sick (it wasn’t a matter of life or death) which I am very thankful for, but I could see she wasn’t a well child and so it was on that day I decided we needed to step up a level in regards to looking at our nutrition and our daily lifestyle. We weren’t an unhealthy family but there was many things I overlooked or didn’t quite realise the effects of because I am a busy working mum.
The reason I am telling you this story is because at first I felt overwhelmed!
My husband and I bought some books we were recommended and didn’t stop reading. I started searching through the health and wellness blogs I knew but never had time to seriously read over. I started to clear out the pantry.
The more I read, the more I felt we needed to do around the home, and for a while it took over our lives.
It has been the best thing I have ever done for the family and there are many stories to tell about this journey another time but during the process I had to stop, take a step back and decide that it can’t be done all at once. We had to slowly make changes where it was easy to, which then lead to bigger changes over time. We continue on this journey. We still have changes to make and lessons to learn. It started with food and now here we are looking at all the other toxins in our lives.
So please, take on board what you can manage. We all lead busy lives and there is only so much we can all manage daily but don’t kick your legs in the air and scream in a pillow (like my photo) and declare it’s all too much. Just realise that you could learn more and decide to commit to yourself and your family to be more aware.
Start with some simple changes. Don’t feel you have to throw out everything and start fresh. Don’t waste money. Take your time and work out what works for your family. I hope I can help you on this journey.
