I know what it’s like to juggle work and family life. You don’t have a lot of time to think about what you are buying when you are whizzing around the supermarket doing the weekly shop. If you are reading this, I know you are concerned about what products you are buying but where to start?
Here are five actions you can take before heading to the checkout which will result in you taking home products with less nasty chemicals and more ingredients sourced from nature – a healthier option for your family!
Scan the shelves and work through the below steps – once you get used to the process it won’t take too too long and will become a habit.
STEP ONE
What products look like natural/green brands?
BEWARE greenwashing – hence the need for next steps.

STEP TWO
Can you see a Certified Organic logo on the label? If it is Certified, it’s an easy buy – they have done all the work for you.
Here are the organic symbols you may find on labels:

STEP THREE
Is there a list of the ingredients that it doesn’t contain? The more the better!

STEP FOUR
Scan the ingredients list. The longer the list and with scientific names you can’t pronounce, the more likely it has questionable ingredients.
You don’t want lists like these!

STEP FIVE
If you want to investigate further, you could do a quick check on your mobile. Downloaded the App Chemical Maze where you can check each ingredient by name if you feel it sounds questionable.
Take these steps and you are bound to be buying a better product.
Without being across all the ingredients and brands and knowing what to look out for, you can still make a better choice. It may not be a product without all the nasties we ideally need to consider but it’s likely to be a product with less of the ingredients that can cause health issues, so already you have taken one positive step forwards for the health of your family!
A few other suggestions…
- Follow some people on Instagram who you know choose low-tox products and see what they are buying. You can follow me here.
- Be mindful when shopping. Ask yourself do I really need this? Does your family or you use the products often? Maybe there are products you can eliminate from your shopping list all together.
